Happy Easter and Second Hand Finds

I was starting wonder if I’d have an Easter post, let alone anything else, I’ve been sick this week (Covid test was negative, thankfully), and just wasn’t well enough to write let alone take photos. But I had to go to the pharmacy and supermarket yesterday, so of course couldn’t not go into the second hand shop just down the road. I’m so glad I made the effort as in the doll basket I found a barely played with Monster High Lagoona Blue, an O.M.G. doll that needed a little TLC and tiny fairy doll, all for the grand sum of $5.  As I was paying for them, I got talking to the owner and it came out that I was a doll collector. The owner asked me to have a look at some bigger dolls that she was trying to identify and place a price on.  I wasn’t much help other than to know a couple of them were Italian and their eras, but I told her I’d ask friends and get back to her if she liked (which I did).  She jumped at the offer and then told me she has boxes of Barbie type dolls, some of which she cuts up and makes jewellery and planters from, the rest eventually make it to the doll basket in the store.  I gathered up my courage and asked if I could go through the box she had out the back, and seeing as I was doing her a favour she said yes.  There were six dolls that grabbed my attention; a Made to Move Barbie, two Shibajuku Girls, naked and in a right state, Liv Jake, The Descendants Ben (that I mistook for an Ever After High boy) and a Sailor Moon Mercury doll.  And I was able to buy them.

My dolly haul. As you can see, a few are quite a mess.

So, now I have a few projects to amuse me while I’m ill. The Made to Move will become a body donor for a head swap, I just haven’t decided which doll to swap with yet. The boys just needed a quick wash, and a couple of Ken outfits that I found NRFB at an op shop for twenty five cents each ages ago.  The shorts on Jake are similar to his original fashion so he can stay in them. He’s been on my wish list for years.  I remember seeing him for sale when he first came out, but I wasn’t buying LIV dolls at that point, my budget didn’t stretch that far, but since then I’ve got a small collection, mostly all bought second hand, and of course, Jake was nowhere to be found. Until now. Ben’s outfit is a bit big and a bit lairy, but it will do until I find him something else. The three dolls I originally bought were a fairly quick save too.  The little fairy had a surface clean and her hair combed.  Lagoona had a surface clean, her hair combed dampened and finger curled and I found her some shoes (hers were missing).  O.M.G. Winter Disco Dollie was more of a challenge, her hair was very matted and I found a unicorn pendant wrapped around her neck and tangled in her hair.  When I finally got all the tangles out, it got finger curled and the doll got a good scrub.  I’ll have to make her a skirt, she’s missing most of her fashion although she does have her cape. Shoes will be a challenge.  As for the Shibajuku Girls, what a job.  Their hair was so tangled it has taken me hours just to comb out.  The hair is very dry and I’m surprised it didn’t break off it feels so brittle.  I’m hoping a long, long, long soak in fabric softener may help, or that it may be up to hair straighteners, but I won’t hold my breath.  My contingency, if it cant be saved, is to cut the pink girl’s hair into a cute bob, while the other will get a short do, a la Twiggy. And as for the Sailor Moon doll, she’s going to a friend, who like me has a tight dolly budget, and a passion for anime.  So, due to illness I can’t eat Easter eggs this year, but I’ve got some great dolly treasures instead. And hopefully, in the words of the shop owner, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship!

I hope you have a happy Easter and eat too much chocolate (eat some for me too). And of course, Jenjoy and the chenille chicks are up to mischief again this year.
